Milestone:
Doris’s success with Belle took her through this period of reflection and accomplishment, during which she dedicated herself to smaller preservation projects, each with its unique charm and challenges. This further cemented her role in the community and the Society for Preservation.
Additionally, through Susan’s connections, Doris found a new rhythm in life, working part-time as a hospital receptionist. Though not demanding, this role gave her a sense of structure and purpose, filling her days with meaningful interactions and the comforting buzz of hospital life.
One lazy Saturday, late in the afternoon, Doris and Susan were seated at Susan’s small, cozy kitchen table. Outside, the setting sun shone through the window, bathing the room in its soft light. A pot of tea steamed between them with a plate of homemade raisin oatmeal cookies. The pair had gotten together to go over new plans for an exciting project that Frank had discovered: an old skating rink from nineteen-eighty needed some work, and the new owners loved what the club did for the Belle, so they reached out to him. He tossed the idea to Susan; naturally, she was enthusiastic and pitched it to Doris.
